The Cameron Rotary Club Cameron Rotary Club dedicated a ADA Veterans Fishing Deck with Ribbon Cutting at Camron’s Sunrise on September 24th. Following months of construction, officials of the Rotary Club, City of Cameron, Chamber of Commerce and Park Board joined for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new, covered ADA compliant Fishing Dock. Cameron Public Works Director Drew Bontrager described the project as the centerpiece of Sunrise Lake. The fishing dock was conceived as a way to allow disabled veterans access to Sunrise Lake.
“Rotary has been in Cameron for 97 years. We’re approaching our 100- year anniversary in 2023 and there have been a lot of projects Rotary has entered into, but I think this is one the community will be proud of for a long time,” Cameron Rotary Club Past President Richard Riddell said. “The idea was to provide a place for veterans with disabilities to be able to get out of their cars and on a hard surface roll right up to a place to fish and be safe about it.” Although cutting the ribbon on the project Monday, Riddell said the new Americans with Disabilities Act compliant dock will have benches and, eventually, a new awning after the previously installed awning was determined to be too small for the structure.
The 15-by-30- foot dock is the latest feature along the walking trail, which recently had exercise equipment installed as part of a project by a local Eagle Scouts and city officials hope to complete the trail loop as soon as the grant funds become available. “This is by far the focal point and centerpiece of Sunrise Lake. It’s been the culmination of multiple projects and multiple groups have contributed to this over the years,” Bontrager said. “We started this years ago. Mayor (Dennis) Clark and the council at the time were pushing for the development of the trail (in 2010) … We have a grant out right now we’ve written for paving the next phase of the trail. There are a lot of partnerships and people coming together, but this is by far the biggest project out here, most impactful and brings it all together.”
