Rotary International District 6040 will be honored with the "Heartland Service Award" by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation (THCF) at its 2011 Gala. The Gala will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the Independence Event Center. Chosen for its service to others in Missouri cities in northern Missouri and throughout the world, District 6040 demonstrates its commitment to the Gala's theme  "Service Above and Beyond."

All District Rotary members are invited to the Gala as one of our own members, Past RI President Ray Klinginsmith (Kirksville Rotary Club), will be accepting the award for the district. Also in attendance will be Past District Governor Jeff Romine and District Governor Dan Hall. Another member attending, Independence Rotarian Fred Hahn, has just completed two years as RI Director.

Rich in giving time and finances, 6040 members reached $310,303.60 (+11.09%) in total Rotary Foundation giving in 2010-11. Annual Programs Fund giving hit $234,030.89 and Polio Plus, $58,325.58. Rotarians serve others through district simplified grants as well as with matching grants internationally. This district has sponsored medical missions by North Kansas City and South Platte Rotary clubs, an educational resource center in Guatemala by host Independence club, and water wells in Mexico and other underdeveloped countries. What about the 75% reduction in malaria in the Malawi villages where we sent bed nets?

It is no wonder Rotary District 6040 attracted the Community Foundation's attention because serving others is the Foundation's goal, too. Last year THCF distributed $2.8 million to charities and nonprofits.

Invitations have been mailed to current and immediate past club presidents. For additional information, you may contact Rotarians Shirley Wurth (shirleywurth@yahoo.com, 816.358.1067) or Roberta "Poo" Coker (rcoker99@gmail.com, 816.373.5191).

Hope you are there to celebrate what we do together!
