District 6040 is getting ready to start a new cycle for Global Scholarship Grants for students traveling in the 2022-2023 academic year (AY23) and Rotary fiscal year. The AY23 academic year would include travel for fall of 2022 through the spring and summer of 2023.
The District 6040 Global Grant Scholarship committee would like to ask you to notify your membership about these opportunities. While these scholarships are not available to Rotarians or their families, one of the best approaches is to identify key college and university contacts who may be able to inform students.
We have had successes in the pre-COVID past. In the academic year 2018-2019 (AY19) we provided three undergraduate college students with District Grants of $2,500 each to aid with their expenses in a study abroad. For AY20, we had one $2,500 District Grant Scholarship and one graduate study Global Grant Scholarship for $30,000. We also had a Global Grant Scholarship for AY21, but that student deferred to AY22 because of COVID putting his program online. With two new recipients in AY22, we have three Global Grant scholars representing our district over this academic year.
Global Grant Scholarships awards range from $30,000-$70,000 and fund graduate level coursework or research for one to two years at an educational institution in another country. Global grants are vetted through the district. Global Grant Scholarships are not awarded until The Rotary Foundation (TRF) approves applicant’s online grant application.
Highly competitive Peace Fellowships are for Master’s degree programs. The Peace Fellowships are fully funded by The Rotary Foundation. Accepted candidates study peace and development issues with research-informed teaching and a diverse student body. The program lasts 15 to 24 months and includes a 2-3 month field study, which participants design themselves. These programs are held at one of the 5 Rotary Peace Centers. Peace Fellowships require that you apply directly to Rotary International (https://www.rotary.org/en/
Note the following requirements for a Global Grants:
• Reside in District 6040 or be currently enrolled and attending or graduated from a higher education institution in District 6040. If not currently enrolled or a graduate of a higher institution with the district, residency will be determined by where the applicant pays income tax or where the applicant’s parents reside if the applicant is considered a deduction on their parent’s income tax return.
• Not be: Rotarians, including Honorary Rotarians (as defined below); employees of clubs, districts, or other Rotary entities, or of Rotary International (RI); spouses, lineal descendants (children or grandchildren by blood, legal adoption, or marriage without adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parents or grandparents by blood) of persons in the above categories; employees of agencies, organizations, or institutions that partner with TRF or RI; former Rotarians and Honorary Rotarians who have terminated their membership within the preceding 36 months; and persons who were ineligible based on their familial relationship to a former Rotarian or Honorary Rotarian, for a period of 36 months after termination of their family member’s membership. An Honorary Rotarian as used herein is defined as an individual who has been granted this highest distinction by a Rotary Club to a non-Rotarian or Rotarian who is not an active member of the granting Club.
• Study outside their home country. District 6040 reserves the right to limit foreign study to areas considered safe by the U.S. Department of State.
