Hello fellow Rotarian,

My name is Jim Bergman. I am a member of the Kirksville Thousand Hills Rotary Club and I have been asked by Marc Horner to Chair the annual Play for Polio (formerly Pars vs. Polio) Chinnery Challenge events for 2019. It is our intent in 2019-2020 to have a multi-level District effort to raise awareness and monies for Rotary’s polio eradication efforts. We are asking each club in the District to have a Polio Awareness and Fund Raising Event.  No matter how big or how small to let people know that even though “we are this close”, Polio is still claiming the lives and limbs of children in the world today and we need to eradicate it forever. I will be communicating with you to provide you with the necessary resources and assist you in any way to plan and execute your club event to raise as much money for the eradication of Polio as we can.

Some examples of events:
  • Pars Vs. Polio - Choose your golfers and gather pledges for Pars Vs. Polio. Remember this is a Golf Marathon, not a Golf Tournament. Golfers get pledges for every hole of golf they play in one day.
  • Bowling day. See if your local bowling alley will donate or reduce the rate for some lanes.  Get Rotarians and non-Rotarians to pay an amount over the cost of the event with the balance going to the Polio Fund.
  • Movie night for Rotarians and non-Rotarians to gather and raise money and awareness.
  • Game night.  Get some board games and families together and raise money and awareness.
  • Trivia night
  • Disc Golf
  • Pickleball
  • Get creative and think up your own event.
Hopefully, your club has participated in the past and is excited to help District 6040 reach our goal of $40,000. We would like the Club events to either be scheduled or held before World Polio Day on October 24th, 2019.  We will feature the results of the events at the Rotary Foundation Dinner on November 2nd, 2019.

To get you started, I have attached a flyer that you can use as a handout and a power point that was presented at PETS last spring that you can use for information or to make a presentation. We ask that you identify a club Champion for the event and notify me with that individual’s contact information asap at jim_bergman@chs.net. The Champion will communicate the details, motivate the club members, coordinate the process and calculate the fundraising. If you do not provide me with the name of a Champion, you will be the point of contact for the project.  All funds raised need to be sent to The Rotary Foundation Polio Fund at the conclusion of your event or at least by the District Conference on April 24, 2020.

Speaking of the District Conference, save that date as we will have the Chinnery Challenge Golf Outing (Information Attached) for District 6040 Rotarians attending the District Conference at the Lake of the Ozarks on April 24,2020. Enjoy great golf, the fellowship of other Rotarians and the satisfaction of helping us finally conquer Polio worldwide. The Outing will not be a traditional tournament in terms of competition and prize money, but a few games will be available and small prizes awarded. Bring your own foursome or get paired up with other Rotarians

This is one of the most important and impactful District wide events that occur each year so please make your best effort to help make it successful.  Thank you in advance for all you do for Rotary and the eradication of Polio.
