A Moment for Peace

Which of your club's projects support Peace?  Our districts' clubs have had projects around anti-bullying in schools, and making the connection that anti-bullying helps promote Peace is easy.  It is helpful to look at the conditions that support peaceful societies as we think about projects that support Peace.

Any work that our Clubs do to fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, improve the health of mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies directly builds the optimal conditions for peaceful societies.  Looking at Peace through this lens expands our understanding of how our clubs can promote Peace in our communities and internationally.

Action Step:    Identify the projects your club conducts annually.  Do they help fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, improve the health of mothers and children, support education, or grow local economies?  If so, your club is supporting Peace.
Singapore awaits the 2024 Rotary International Convention, which will take place from May 25-29.  District 6040 currently has 7 attendees registered to attend the 2024 RI Convention, and we look forward to seeing a few more of you in Singapore.  We'll have more details later, but we'll have some sort of gathering over beverages and appetizers for anyone from our District who is able to go.  The convention cost is currently $500, but goes up to $595 on December 16.  To learn more or get signed up, please visit https://convention.rotary.org/en-us.
The "top tier" Rotary Clubs of Unionville, Schuyler County, and Scotland County came together for a 5th Thursday social at the Lake Thunderhead Marina.  Close to 30 members and guests were in attendance, enjoying a challenging game of Rotary trivia.

Purple Pinkie Donut Program
We are excited to announce we are doing the Purple Pinkie Donut program again this year to help raise money for PolioPlus for you and your clubs.

Over the last 5 years Districts from Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri and Kansas partnered with Dunkin Donuts to give donuts away in exchange for PolioPlus donations.  It has become a very successful campaign and generated over $5,000,000.00.  The Clubs in our District last year raised close to $13,500.00, and with the matches of the District, Rotary International and the Gates Foundation, that turned into almost $102,000.00 for PolioPlus.

Shoes for Orphan Souls
While each year of this service project is great, our 23rd year will be special.  Rotary District 6040 will be joined by District 6060 and District 6080 in this year’s collection, and I am extremely excited about this development. Our District 6040 Governor, Randy Steinman, has encouraged the Rotary Clubs throughout the great state of Missouri to join the Shoes for Orphan Souls efforts.  District 6060 Governor Valerie Sorensen, and District 6080 Governor Jimmy Standfast, are joining Randy to spread the word as we hope to collect 50,000 pairs of shoes across the state of Missouri this year.

A Second Moment for Peace
A Rotary project is helping victims of war in Ukraine.  Since the start of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian power grid has been a target of Russian airstrikes.  The Ukrainian power grid is essential for citizens as they depend on it to charge cell phones, a critical lifeline.  Cell phones let people know when to evacuate or take shelter, where they can find food and medical assistance, and how to check on the status of loved ones fighting to defend their country.
